Telegram Ads Rules in 2026: What's Allowed, What's Banned and Why Ads Get Rejected
A practical walk-through of Telegram's ad policies as rewritten in 2026: text and link format, destination requirements for channels, bots, accounts and websites, the new search-keyword rule, the full list of prohibited categories and a pre-submission checklist.
Contents
Every ad on the Telegram Ad Platform goes through moderation against one document: the Ad Policies and Guidelines. It applies to all ads — bought in the euro cabinet, the Gram cabinet or with Stars. Between May and August 2026 Telegram rewrote the section on destinations and added a rule for search keywords. This guide goes through the current version section by section and ends with a checklist.
What changed in 2026#
Comparing the current page with the version archived on 18 May 2026 (archive):
- Section 4 became "Destination and targeting requirements" and was split into eight clauses.
- Accounts joined channels and bots as destinations that must have a profile image and a complete description.
- The activity rule got stricter. Before: a channel must have had "some activity" in the two weeks before review. Now: at least one post published in the two weeks before review — and empty bots and accounts are banned too.
- Language match softened: the targeted channel's language "should match" the ad and destination, where it used to say "must be the same".
- A new clause 4.8 for search ads: keywords must not exploit harmful, prohibited or sensitive topics.
- The prohibited-content list (section 5) did not change in substance.
1–3. Text, style and links#
- Length: the ad text is up to 160 characters including spaces, plus one button.
- Editorial rules: no profanity (including masked), no vague or repetitive text, no gimmicky capitalization, s p a c i n g or symbol art, no intrusive emoji, and no line breaks, bullet points or numbered lists.
- Links: one main link in the URL field, and at most one extra link in the text, written as @link, t.me/link or t.me/link/123. Both must lead to the same place. Bot links may carry start parameters. URL shorteners and IP addresses are not allowed.
4. Destinations and targeting#
- 4.1 Profile. Promoted channels, bots and accounts need a profile image and a filled-in description.
- 4.2 Works. Bots must respond properly on mobile and desktop. Websites must load — no "under construction", error codes, paywalls, login walls, or blocks for the countries you target.
- 4.3 Relevant. The destination must match the ad. No pages that only redirect elsewhere, no "call me back" data-collection mock-ups, no 302 or .htaccess redirects.
- 4.4 No manipulation. Swapping the destination's content after review, cloaking or imitating another brand can get the advertiser suspended without notice.
- 4.5 Not empty. No empty or abandoned channels, bots or accounts. A channel needs at least one post in the last two weeks.
- 4.6 Style. No profanity or gimmicky capitalization on the destination either.
- 4.7 Language. The targeted channel's language should match the ad and the destination.
- 4.8 Keywords. Search keywords must not exploit harmful, prohibited or sensitive topics.
5. Prohibited content#
| Clause | Category | Examples from the policy |
|---|---|---|
| 5.1 | Graphic, shocking or sexual | Gore, nudity, sexual merchandise and entertainment, dating services |
| 5.2 | Hate, violence, harassment | Discrimination, bullying, doxxing |
| 5.3 | Third-party rights | Piracy, impersonating brands or public figures, misuse of the Telegram logo |
| 5.4 | Deceptive or predatory | Clickbait, unsupported superlatives, comparing your brand to another, questions about personal characteristics, fear tactics, exploiting tragedies |
| 5.5 | Politics and religion | Campaigns, parties, candidates, religious movements |
| 5.6 | Gambling | Casinos, sports betting, lotteries, bingo, fantasy sports, tips and odds |
| 5.7 | Harmful finance | Payday loans, pyramid schemes, MLM, guaranteed returns, hidden fees |
| 5.8 | Uncertified medicine | Supplements, weight-loss products, unapproved drugs, unlicensed treatments |
| 5.9 | Drugs, alcohol, tobacco | Including e-cigarettes and home-brewing kits |
| 5.10 | Weapons | Firearms, parts, knives, pepper spray, fireworks |
| 5.11 | Spam and malware | Social-media growth services, incentivized clicks, bot traffic, phishing |
| 5.12 | Questionable legality | Fake documents, stolen data, counterfeits |
Two points people often miss. First, the rules are identical in every cabinet — paying in Gram or Stars does not open categories the euro cabinet rejects. Second, the policy applies to the ad and to the product it promotes, "whether implied or explicit".
Checklist before you submit#
- Text ≤160 characters, no line breaks, lists, caps tricks or emoji spam.
- No superlatives you can't back up and no comparison with a competitor brand.
- One link at most in the text, same destination as the button, no shorteners.
- Destination has a photo, a description and a post from the last two weeks.
- Bot answers /start on phone and desktop; website loads from the target countries without a login.
- Language of ad = language of destination = language of the targeted channels.
- Nothing from section 5 — including in what the destination sells.
- For search ads: keywords are about your product, not about tragedies or sensitive topics.
Common rejection reasons#
- The destination channel is new or has not posted recently.
- The ad text says "best", "No. 1" or compares with a named competitor.
- The website redirects or asks visitors to log in.
- The product falls under a banned category (gambling, dating, supplements, "grow your followers" services).
- The language of the ad does not match the channels you picked.
