The oldest problem in buying Telegram channel placements is simply getting through to the admin. Contacts in channel descriptions go stale, personal accounts are hidden, and managers disappear. In June 2025 Telegram added a built-in answer: direct messages for channels — a private inbox that belongs to the channel itself (Telegram blog). For advertisers it is both a contact channel and the door to Suggested Posts.
How channel direct messages work#
- The admin switches them on in Channel Settings → Direct Messages.
- You write to the channel, not to a person. Messages land in a separate inbox; admins with the right permission answer on the channel's behalf without revealing their own accounts.
- The channel can charge per message in Stars. Of what you pay, the channel receives 85% (API config); the maximum price of a paid message is set by Telegram's configuration (35,000 Stars by default). The admin can exempt specific users and refund them.
- There is a direct link:
t.me/<username>?directopens the channel's DMs straight away (Telegram API: links). - It is also where Suggested Posts live. A channel without DMs cannot receive paid post offers.
Why advertisers care#
- A reliable contact. The inbox belongs to the channel and does not change when the manager does.
- A price signal. A per-message fee filters out spam; for you it signals that the admin takes offers seriously.
- A path to escrowed deals. From the same chat you can send a Suggested Post with a price in Stars or Gram, and Telegram holds the money until the post has been live for 24 hours (Telegram blog).
How to use DMs in a campaign#
1. Build a list of channels with DMs on. Open each channel and look for the message button in the bottom bar. Note whether a fee is charged.
2. Budget for the messages. If ten channels charge for DMs, your outreach has a cost before any placement. Keep the first message short and complete so one message is enough.
3. Write an offer that can be answered in one reply:
- who you are and what you promote (one line);
- the format you want — a native post, a mention, a Suggested Post;
- your budget or the price you propose;
- the dates;
- how you will pay — as a Suggested Post in Stars or Gram, or by the admin's usual terms.
4. Move the deal into a Suggested Post when possible: the price, time and text are fixed in the offer, and the refund is automatic if the post comes down within 24 hours. See our Suggested Posts playbook.
5. Keep compliance in mind. Direct deals and Suggested Posts are still advertising under local law. In Russia, for example, they need marking with an erid — see Telegram ad marking in Russia.
Common mistakes#
- Sending "Hi, how much for an ad?" — on a paid inbox that is a wasted message.
- Assuming every channel has DMs. Many have not switched them on.
- Paying outside escrow when escrow is available. A Suggested Post protects both sides.
- Forgetting the post cannot be edited once a Suggested Post is paid.
FAQ#
How do I know a channel accepts direct messages?
There is a message button in the channel's bottom bar, and the t.me/<username>?direct link opens the chat.
How much does a message cost? Whatever the channel sets, in Stars; it can be free. The channel receives 85% of the price.
Is a paid message the same as a paid post? No. The message fee pays for contacting the channel; a Suggested Post is a separate offer with its own price, paid into escrow.
